A collaboration between publisher tony perez and turtle Bay Resort, Surfer, The Bar (surferthebar.com) has already generated swells of excitement since its launch last fall, and for good reason. Every week, the mixed-media hot spot plays host to surf legends talking story, fine Hawaiian music and even local indie films—not to mention that it’s the best place for pupus and a cold one after a surf sesh. s pa c e s pARtY House b e s p ok e sc e n t s fi lm Spectacular CELLuLOID FuLL Bloom Saffron James Parfums ( saffronjames.com), created by local girl and former beauty editor Kate Growney , often inspires exotic visions for both mainland and local scent seekers. Smartly abstaining from literal interpretations, growney spikes island blossoms with global counterparts— as in her latest addition Ipo, a heady blend of pakalana, tiare and Moroccan rose. No wonder her scents have been flying off shelves for the past year. For Gina caruso , director of the Doris Duke theatre (honolulumuseum.org/events/films), her verve for film started with Bergman’s Cries and Whispers . (She was only 12!) And for the past five years, the Bard alum has lit that same spark for countless viewers at Honolulu’s only art-house cinema. Her key to success? Working with the community to create a boldly eclectic program, including the hugely popular Surf Film Festival and this spring’s feast of contemporary Filipino films, which she describes as amongst the world’s “most artistically daring.” 88 | | Spring 2012 oaSiS world eStateS photo by abSolutely loved photography; doriS duke theatre photo by Shuzo uemoto Hard to believe, but it’s been about 20 years since Kathy Ireland left her career as a supermodel to run a billion-dollar business empire. One of her many endeavors is Kathy Ireland Estates, elegant homes that she rents out for intimate dream weddings, chic dinner parties, corporate retreats or fashion show soirées, and more. One of her most popular properties is the Oceanfront Oasis (oasisworldestates. com) on Kalanianaole Highway, across Hawaii Loa Ridge—an ideal location that offers a luxurious oceanfront setting with a casual atmosphere. The estate is two stories, with universal access to its unique mosaic-tiled pool that easily converts into a dance floor, lush landscaped gardens and master bedroom—including the room where Elizabeth taylor used to stay in when she’d come to town. It’s walled and gated with security and privacy, and wired with high-speed Internet access for corporate retreats. But note, although there are seven beautiful bedrooms and eight exquisite bathrooms, you can only rent this out by the day; there are no overnight rentals. SOLE Sensation In a town where surf shorts and slippers seem almost de rigueur, Iolani alum Tom Park’s leather soul has established the new paragon in men’s shoes with superbly crafted finds from prestigious brands like Britannia’s gallant George Cleverley—all in a posh, Sinatra-soaked setting that’s far more old-school private club than boutique. Discriminating gents have been sold on the fine footwear, of course, but also on Park and staff’s brand of camaraderie and panache. Royal Hawaiian Center, Level 3, 922.0777, leathersoul.com
