We take a look at its crop of contributions to public education and economic opportunities, and the group’s role in helping to create vibrant urban and community places. Main Event Get Fresh M July 9-15 July 1997 FRESHFARM opens DC’s fi rst producer-only farmers market in Dupont Circle. July 1998 The second FRESHFARM Market opens in Saint Michaels, Md. FRESHFARM Markets, the largest network of MARKEt FoRCES Foodies shop the Penn Quarter stalls. farmers in the Chesapeake region, has helped defi ne DC’s farm-to-table culture, creating an urban-rural partnership that brings standout farmers markets to the district. To celebrate the org’s 15th anniversary in July, farm-fresh dishes and other market mania offer a recipe for good, clean fun. What a Dish Th e District’s leading chefs, mixologists and producers create their own unique anniversary dish or cocktail in honor of the FRESHFARM birthday extravaganza. Local favorites Restaurant Nora, Art and Soul, Cedar, Dino, Estadio, RIS and Sweetgreen are among the many stirring up market-inspired dishes. July 9-15 . Various restaurants M July 2008 FRESHFARM becomes the fi rst DC farmers market to offer food stamps and later provide free matching dollars to the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Nov. 2002 The team hosts the inaugural Farmland Feast at Ristorante Tosca, since known as the “locavore event of the year.” Sept. 2009 First lady Michelle Obama attracts 10,000 customers to the White House Market, opened at her request. It’s the ninth FRESHFARM location. Mark it Anniversary activities will be on off er at each location. Taste signature dishes unique to each neighborhood—Jaleo’s Drew Terp will be doing a demo in Crystal City, July 10; Orlando Amaro from Station 4 will be at Penn Quarter, July 12; and 8407 Kitchen Bar’s Pedro Matamoros will be at the Silver Spring Market, July 14. Sweet-tooth-satisfying favorites Capital Kettle Corn and Pleasant Pops are also scheduled to join in on the celebration. July 9-15 . All FRESHFARM Markets Birthday Bash Farm-ophiles will have the opportunity to celebrate in a more intimate setting at the FRESHFARM post-market Birthday Bash. Th e fête will cap off the celebratory week, just as the Dupont Circle Market closes shop. Th e family-friendly event is free; though donations are appreciated. July 15 . 4-7pm. 20th Street Northwest and Massachusetts Avenue Date Night Th e freshest dinner date in district history, happens when FRESHFARM Markets partners with chef Todd Gray to off er a morning White House Market tour to select fresh ingredients, followed by an evening cooking lesson and dinner, prepared by Gray and the Equinox Restaurant culinary team at the chef’s Muse at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. July 26 and Aug. 30 . Market tour 11:30am, class and dinner 6pm. $40. At White House Market, 810 Vermont Ave. NW; At Muse, 500 17th St. NW Dec. 2009 The org kicks off its Farmer Fund Scholarship program, currently known as the Jean Wallace Douglas Farmer Fund, which awards nearly $20,000 in annual scholarships to young local farmers in support of continuing education. Oct. 2011 The nonprofi t’s FoodPrints Food Lab opens at Watkins Elementary School after a $60,000 Kickstarter fundraising campaign that includes a generous gift from Think Food Group. Dec. 2011 FRESHFARM Markets’ farmers and producers hit the 400,000-pound mark for food donated to 15 gleaning partners, including DC Central Kitchen, Thrive DC and others, since the gleaning program’s start. May 2012 The 15th season of the widely recognized Chef at Market series is launched, which has included cooking demonstrations by stars like Anthony Bourdain, José Andrés and many more. June 2012 FRESHFARM Markets wins the 2012 Mayor’s Sustainability Award.
