... THE NEWBIE Treasure Hunt The newest store selling ye olde wares in the Cedros Avenue Design District is Circa (circaoncedros. com). While the original reclaimed master Jennifer Price holds court down the street at SoLo, Circa owner Kirsten Sumlin doles out her fair share of oddities, found objects and jewelry aplenty. That stash includes everything from Victorian gold to Art Deco crystal. “I wanted a warm and inviting place with an old-world bohemian feel,” says Sumlin of the space that formerly housed Birdcage. “I think we’re a perfect fi t on Cedros.” THE GET Winged Victory “It’s a stunning piece of work,” says Jeff Jacobs of the recent artwork he acquired as the centerpiece for Rancho Valencia resort, which is undergoing a world-class makeover. So of course, we’re not talking just any art. “Imploration,” by famed Brit artist Damien Hirst, features real butterfl y wings that shimmer and radiate color. The painting will hang in the restaurant. THE CRAFT A Cut Above At Societe Brewing Company’s new taproom, the lost art of the silhouette is having a revival. Hand-cut in black paper and pasted against a pale background, the portraits were a household staple in the late 1800s. For a modern spin, S.D.’s Mother Sponge design rm asked the brewers’ friends to pose in antique nery against a backlit screen. ey used the silhouettes as tap handles, art and the logo. “Before photography became more accessible, silhouettes were an alternative for the common person,” says designer Sean Kelley. THE FIND Getting Schooled! SDSU continues to be a force in furniture.
