Best of the City desiGn tie One On With his charming mix of hipster and gent, La Jolla musician and budding designer Zach Barnhorst is bringing the old-school bow tie back to La Jolla. “What I love about a bow tie is that it allows you to be as silly as you want while maintaining a certain level of class,” says Barnhorst, who has about 50 in his stash. When he couldn’t fi nd enough cool designs in stores, he decided to manufacture his own locally. ZB savoy Bowtie Co. launches this winter with dozens of designs, clever names included. Th ere’s the James Dean, a newspaper print on white denim, and the Edgar Allen Poe, a classy brown houndstooth, but Barnhorst prefers the casual bow tie. “It’s a great juxtaposition,” he says. A portion of proceeds from all bow ties goes toward the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Next up? Th is spring, Savoy Bowtie Co. plans to launch suspenders and vests. zbsavoy.com
