Best of O.C. 2013 Culture toP notes! Pac Symph’s newest conductor is ready to start the music. Growing up in Costa Rica, alejandro gutiérrez dreamed of one day becoming a doctor or pilot. A musically minded father instead infl uenced him to pursue a career as a musician/conductor. After taking time off to earn a doctorate in orchestral conducting at the University of Texas, the seasoned maestro this month offi cially joins O.C.’s Pacifi c Symphony (pacifi csymphony.org) as assistant conductor. “I knew a lot about the Pacifi c Symphony... It’s a model for many orchestras in this country,” says Gutiérrez, who succeeds Assistant Conductor Maxim Eshkenazy. “When I was invited, I didn’t have to think about it twice.”
