Peint Brushes When you step into Deborah Cooper-Ramos’ new shop, Peinture (3323 Hyland Ave., Ste. E2, Costa Mesa, 714.427.0668, peinturestore.com), she wants you to be engaged by the art of home decor—or, more specifi cally, the colors of it. It’s like a paint store, but so much more. Th e newest addition to SoCo’s hip retail scene is an ode to Chalk Paint, created by the U.K.’s Annie Sloan. Th e paint requires no sanding or priming, and it allows customers’ creativity to soar. “Th ey get so excited, and they buy right on the spot,” says Cooper-Ramos. “It’s kind of like a revolutionary thing.” Inside the store, videos of Sloan using the paint play. A wall is covered with 30 mounted chairs, each painted in a diff erent Annie Sloan color. On display is a half-painted baby grand piano, an example of how the paint enlivens old furniture. Th en there are painted surfaces in the store—glass, metal, brick—demonstrating the paint’s versatility. A key feature of the Peinture experience is its workshops. Customers bring in old furniture and leave with a lovely piece transformed in a workshop. Th e concept for the shop was conceived in a booth in Old Towne Orange. Cooper-Ramos outgrew the space and was looking for a new one—just as SoCo was in need of a paint store to round out its mix. “It was a really good fi t,” Cooper-Ramos says. “It’s a place that’s super exciting, especially in my world.” –JS Feu de Bois Gris 300 g candle, $90, by Diptyque at Nordstrom, South Coast Plaza
