I make all of the decisions in my house. And if you ask my wife, I think she’ll agree. We’ve developed a system that seems to work for us, and it’s very simple. For most decisions, my wife considers the possibilities and provides me with three choices: two she knows I’ll hate—and a third one she loves. Stop laughing—sometimes, marriage is about process as much as compromise. Making decisions easier is what our editorial team is all about. They’re curators of everything from haute style to amazing food. We recognize that you lead busy lives, so our staff took the decision-making challenge into their own hands for our “Best of the City” feature. I hope it proves to be your personal roadmap for the year ahead. It’s an incredible look at what’s happening in design, fashion, culture and much more. My hunch is that your reaction to this issue will be twofold. First, you’ll see we’ve uncovered many things you didn’t even know were on the horizon (my personal favorite is the incredible dance events in March at the Center for the Arts). Second, your brand-new 2014 calendar will be quickly filled with gallery openings, special events and dining dates at new restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, I usually wax poetic about cuisine in this space for our Restaurant Issue—but I couldn’t wait. I’m thrilled to announce our new partnership with the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington. While we’ll work with this incredible group throughout the year, our first project is the comprehensive Restaurant Guide that’s being mailed with this issue. It includes more than 200 restaurants—all of which participate in January’s Restaurant Week—and it’s a source that you can turn to 12 months a year. If you didn’t get a copy, don’t fret: The guides are available online at modernluxury.com/dc. And please don’t forget: There’s plenty ahead as the calendar changes, including amazing springtime opportunities like our Charity Datebook, a special dining section and an entire issue focused on spring fashion and home design. As years are born, we often look back to reflect upon the road we’ve traveled. For me, it’s been overwhelmingly rewarding to hear from so many readers, industry partners and advertisers about the state of our magazine—from who and what we feature to our gorgeous redesign. Your kind words are the reason I get up early every day eager to help thousands of readers discover the Washington region. Here’s to a wonderful 2014!
