Looking around Twig & Twine , Heather Williams’ Silver Lake floral studio and boutique, it’s clear that Williams thrives working in a three-dimensional medium. “I’ve always had a design background, and liked working with my hands,” the Sonoma County native says on why she left a career in graphic design for the world of blooms and greens. After moving to L.A. from San Francisco, Williams assisted wedding florists and easily attracted attention. It didn’t take long for Twig & Twine’s event calendar to fill , yet Williams was itching to branch out. So she opened her small shop in late 2013 on a buzzy block of Virgil Avenue that includes foodie hot spots Sqirl and Lou’s Wine and Provisions. In addition to the freshest blossoms, Williams selects items that “go with flowers, or things you might give with flowers that catch [her] eye.” Ceramics, wood vessels, textiles and other handcrafted objects reflect her penchant for rich textures paired with soft, muted tones. Here, Williams shares some ideas on how to make the right impression (and avoid floral cliches) with certain personality types on Valentine’s Day. Her overall approach to the craft also applies to matters of the heart. “Let the flower be the flower, and don’t force it to be something else,” she says. 716. N. They’re a little more expensive, but they’re worth the money.” 3. mOd: ANemONeS “Anemones unfold to show a bold black-and-white color scheme. They are quite quirky and unique.” 4. ChILd AT heART: dAffOdILS daffodils are a reminder that “you don’t have to use that typical Valentine’s day color palette.” While signature bright yellow petals are certainly eye-catching, Williams encourages clients to consider “the creamy-colored ones. They’re cheerful, too.” 30 angeleno february 2014 SUGAR HIGH The gorgeous nuage cake from Bo Nuage is the perfect cloud of meringue, whipped cream and chocolate shavings. twIG anD twIne photos by MelIssa VallaDares
