AUGUST 2009 SAN FRANCISCO 23 CLICK WHEN: 8:45 a.m. 6/14/09 WHERE: San Francisco Bay The San Francisco skyline may scream “postcard,” but for 1,657 of the world’s best triathletes, it’s equal parts magnificent and menacing. That’s because the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon is considered one of the most difficult (albeit popular) races on the planet. This 1.5-mile swim in the bay’s bone- chilling waters is only the beginning; after reaching the Marina from Alcatraz Island, intrepid souls take off on a rigorous 18-mile bike ride through the Presidio. Their final challenge, an eight-mile run, includes a 400- step climb up the Sand Ladder at Baker Beach. Michael Phelps, eat your heart out. PHOTOGRAPHER: Navid Baraty
