Summer has always been my favorite season, but this year, it holds even more significance to me: It marks a year since I made the decision to leave my hometown of New York City and move back to Los Angeles, the place that stole my heart during my college years at USC. I have always been captivated by California: its sheer beauty, diverse offerings and, of course, its incredible design. Being given the opportunity to edit Modern Luxury Interiors California and celebrate the region in all of its glory has truly been one of the greatest joys—and honors—of my life. In this issue, as always, we have strived to highlight the people, places and products that are shaping and reshaping the state of design in California right now. We check in with dynamo Thomas Lavin, who is opening a sprawling new showroom at the Laguna Design Center; spotlight Carlsbad-based tile visionary Erin Adams and her new lifestyle brand, House Fifty Two; visit Eve Petrucci at her groundbreaking San Francisco showroom, DZINE; travel to Sonoma County with textile guru Sandra Jordan; and ask the ever-stylish Mary Ta of Minotti L.A. to reveal the fashion and decor items she is currently coveting. We also cover the top store and showroom openings across the state—from Pirch in San Diego to BoConcept’s new L.A. shop to House of Honey’s recently-opened boutique in Montecito—and divulge some of our favorite new trends. I am particularly drawn to our take on classic Nantucket nautical style: Who knew basic rope could be so luxe? Of course, profiling beautiful homes will always be the heart of this magazine, and in this issue, we take you inside some truly spectacular residences. In the San Francisco Bay Area, we discover a unique hillside spot that has been given a bold-yet-minimalistic redesign by local talents Mark Brand and Applegate Tran. And if oceanside living is more your speed, be sure to check out the gorgeous Dana Point seaside home conceived in collaboration between Kara Smith of Smith & Firestone Associates and Richard Landry’s Landry Design Group. And here in Los Angeles, Senior Editor Laura Eckstein visits an ultraglam Westlake Village residence created by interior designer Thomas Schoos. This magnificent home is also featured on our cover. So wherever these gorgeous summer months take you, be it a secluded beach or a picturesque vineyard or even your own backyard, I hope you bring along this magazine and let it serve as a resource, inspiration and celebration of everything that makes this state so great. Have a wonderful season!
