FINISHING UP Living in the Windy City is no longer an excuse for looking windblown. With the rise of specialty finishing salons—swank operations that focus on a limited number of specific services—Chicago women now have access to head-to-toe attention that ensures a refined look without the hassle of trying to fit into the busy schedules of their usual stylists. Here, the most polished. -Sarah Ryan Goldplaited The brainchild of two self-described "beauty hobbyists," Goldplaited is the marriage of a blowout bar and makeup lounge, where the makeup consultation and application services take center stage. For owners (and sisters) Mal and Corinna Strong, the goal is to create accessibility to what they call "little luxuries." Whether preparing for a gala or a first date, Goldplaited strives to add a little pep to your step. The menu of services is straightforward, but the options for your look are nearly unlimited. Mal recommends adding airbrush foundation to the makeup application for a runway-ready look. Opt for a more traditional blowout, or visit the Trendbar to have a stylist recreate your favorite updo. (Stylists can tackle anything from the traditional to a braided faux-hawk.) "Women walk in all the time fresh from the gym, hair in a top knot. They have their hair and makeup done, go into our luxe changing room in the back, put on their outfit, finish with a spritz from our selection of designer perfumes and head straight to their event," Mal says. "An appointment here is about finishing the whole look." Makeup application from $45, blowouts from $38, Trendbar style from $30, 2803 N. Sheffield Ave., 773.880.9180, goldplaited.com Glowout A sister to the well-established Golden Girl airbrush tanning salon (a favorite of Giuliana Rancic), Glowout opened in April 2014. The initial draw for clients: founder Jenn Dieas' expert tanning application techniques. The added bonus: Glowout's merger of high-end tanning with blowout and nail services. One of the signature services at Glowout is its express tan, which sets in about half the time of the classic tan. Pair the express tan with one of the celebrity-inspired blowouts from the lookbook, which changes seasonally. For Dieas, though, Glowout is about more than just beauty services. "I hope each woman feels connected," says Dieas. "We want people to feel welcome—like they are in their best friend's beautiful West Loop apartment while we cater to their every need." Blowouts from $40, tanning from $50, nail services from $15, 160 N. Halsted St., 312.605.0905, glowoutsalon. Com Drybar The matriarch of the upscale blow-dry bar, Drybar co-founder Alli Webb set up a blowouts-only shop in Brentwood, Calif., in 2010. In less than four years, Drybar has expanded to almost 40 locations nationwide. After a deluge of social media requests from savvy Chicagoans, Webb decided to open a location in Lincoln Park. While romantic comedies play in the background, clients select their style from a cocktail-themed lookbook. Another added touch? Drybar uses its own products and tools, developed by Webb and her stylists, which were crafted specifically to create a long-lasting blowout. "Drybar is a lot of fun and a great escape for women. We see women of all different ages and ethnicities come in before important events to feel even better about themselves," says Webb. "This isn't just about blowouts—it is about the happiness and confidence that comes from a great blowout." Blowouts $40, 1611 N. Sheffield Ave., 312.288.3087, thedrybar.com
