Love conquers all—even Mount Kilimanjaro. Fate rst found James in Chicago after he relocated to the city for work and, just three days later, he met his gorgeous once-and-future, Alexis. e couple followed this initial turn of fortune straight on to Tanzania, exchanging one lifetime adventure for another. Working months with H. Horwitz Co. to create a custom sparkler for Alexis, James smuggled the bauble on safari, schlepped it to the summit of Kilimanjaro and then popped the question. Back home, the Sinclair Ballroom at the Waldorf Astoria hosted the couple’s New Year’s Eve nuptials— both the ceremony and reception. “It was so festive, and people just wanted to have fun,” they said of the date that produced not only the intended mood but plenty of personal touches too. James’ sister, Tara Sutton, read an Apache wedding blessing, and Alexis’ friend Megan Freeman recited a poem, “ e Key to Love.” Her cousin Sarah Geocaris belted out “Ave Maria,” while younger brother Mike served as her “Man of Honor.” e couple’s wedding bands also were custom-made by H. Horwitz Co., with Alexis’ channel-set band featuring heirloom diamonds from a ring given to the groom’s mother by his father upon James’ birth. Alexis calls the bridal party “such troopers” for traipsing about the city taking photos in 9-degree weather. She and James warmed up soon enough, though, with a weeklong honeymoon in the Maldives. “We had a smallish wedding party with just four on each side, so we used the readings to include others who are very important to us,” says Alexis.
