Death BecomesHim ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE Mark Denesuk puts a hip new spin on the inevitable for aging boomers. MarkDenesuk justmight be the grimreaper of creative advertising—and that’s a good thing. T e founder of fi ve-year-oldDallas ad agency CommerceHouse, and a 20-plus-year veteran ofNew York’s esteemedMcCaan- Erickson and Ogilvy & Mather, Denesuk landed the national account for California-based Forest Lawn Morturaries. He delivers a droll take on our mortal end with a campaign of outdoor ads and radio spots. T emessage:Don’t go out anonymously. And whatever you do, “Don’t have someone else’s funeral.” A tie-dye- wearing Deadhead with the banner reading, “Served UnderReagan” is the visual traffi c-stopper on one of his billboards. Radio spots, meanwhile, go the way of bank automation, asking callers to punch a digitized 1-2-3 for info gathering, and presto!—out pops a “personalized” eulogy.T e sardonic bits have caught the eyes and ears of other funeral homes across the country looking for the same six-feet-under re-branding. Death is cool again! “Baby boomers have reinvented every ritual in their lives and nowit’s time for themto start reinventing death,” deadpans Denesuk. One thing’s for sure, you’ll die laughing.
