PERFECT PLAN

Precise planning combined with personal touches make for an evening to remember.

WHILE NO ONE would describe this beautiful bride or the man’s-man groom as old-fashioned, they did first meet in a rather traditional way—in a bar. A whirlwind courtship led to a surprise proposal less than 18 months later.

As a marketing director, Allison is used to planning events; her industry relationships meant her vendors read more like a friends and family list. “Because everyone involved was someone I knew, the planning process was so much more fun,” she explains. Case in point: a long-time partner, Laura Manteuffel , and good friend, Drew Roper, helped with the invitations, while CT-Designs (ct-designs.com) added calligraphy to the envelopes. Making all the decisions as a couple also made things easier and more enjoyable. “I’d tell any groom-to-be to get as involved as possible in the planning,” says Derek. “You’ll appreciate the big day more having been part of the preparations.”

After a traditional Catholic ceremony at St. James Chapel, guests moved to The Ivy Room for dinner and dancing. Playing off the already warm and inviting feel of the space, Allison opted for a soft and romantic aesthetic accentuated with copious candles and a palette of whites, greens and pops of clementine. She also created all the day-of stationery, plus custom signage on gilded mirrors and a hand-drawn map of Chicago. “It was important to me to add a personal touch,” she says.

The party started at cocktail hour with singer-songwriter Ariel Upton (arielupton.com) performing live. DJ Megan Taylor, paired with a drummer from Gold Coast All Stars, and an array of desserts— including the couple’s favorite, banana pudding from Magnolia Bakery (magnoliabakery.com), and Molly’s Cupcakes (mollyscupcakes.Com)—fueled an all-night dance party. “We found our priest at the end of the night on the dance floor holding a box of leftover cupcakes!” recalls Allison.

Post-nuptials, the couple honeymooned at the Viceroy Resort in St. Lucia, where, says Allison, the service was exceptional. “Derek loves mangos, so a butler climbed a tree to get us a fresh one.” Talk about a sweet ending.
