WIDE-OPEN SPACES For the first time in its 165-year history, the massive Waggoner Ranch hits the sales block. Just three hours northwest of bustling downtown Dallas lies one of the country's largest ranches under one fence: the W.T. Waggoner Estate Ranch. Now, for the first time since it was founded in 1849, the property is for sale. At 510,527 acres, the Waggoner Ranch spans six North Texas counties and covers nearly 800 square miles. But it's more than the size that makes this spread impressive. In addition to 1,000-plus producing oil wells, the property includes thousands of cattle, 30,000 acres of farmland, a nationally recognized quarter horse program and several large lakes, each one covering anywhere from 1,000 to 16,000 surface acres. And because commercial hunting has never been allowed on the land, the ranch also serves as home to healthy populations of deer, doves, quail, hogs and other wildlife. All these perks come at a price, however: $725 million, to be exact. So, obviously, this property requires a special type of buyer. But thanks to a new book by Fort Worthbased photographer Jeremy Enlow, the rest of us can get a taste of ranch life without even getting our boots muddy. In Cowboys of the Waggoner Ranch ($58, waggonercowboys.com), Enlow goes behind the scenes with the ranch's 26 cow camp workers, documenting in vivid detail the final days of family ownership of this historic, one-of-a-kind estate.
