C culture It’s Personal shutterbugs stephanie dowda and John paul Floyd focus on “the fam” T ough they’ve worked behind Atlanta’s scenes for some time now, artist couple Stephanie Dowda, 27, and John Paul Floyd, 30, are fi nally about to bust out of their conjoined cocoons.T ese partners in creativity have their hands full this winter. T e dynamic duo teams up for a show at the alternative N. Highland gallery Young Blood for Time Line (Jan. 2-31).T e collaborative project employs vintage family photos and contemporary self-portraits shot by Dowda and Floyd to examine how past, present and future are constructed through the visual image. “We’re interested in what memories are,” says Dowda. “And how we gain knowledge about the past by examining old photos.” Also on the agenda this January, the debut of Dowda’s pet project, the nonprofit Photographer’s Print Studio at Serenbe. Long frustrated by the expense and creative isolation of being a photographer, Dowda teamed up with some like-minded souls to establish this creative studio and meeting place. It’s the only studio in Georgia where photographers can print their own work at affordable prices. Sonic Boomers Futuristic funkster JanelleMonáe is on a roll. She snagged a 2009 Grammy nomination, opened for Gwen Stefani over the summer, and this January releases Suites 2 and 3 of her acclaimed album Metropolis on Diddy’s Bad Boy label. Also upping their profi le in the new year: local indie pop sensations the Constellations, who just inked a four-record dealwithVirgin, including a re-release of their debut album SouthernGothic chronicling ATL’s underbelly.
