However, it wasn’t until they were in their 20s that love struck. After a first date in Coronado, the pair was inseparable, going on to live in San Diego, L.A. and NYC—and traveling to nearly 30 countries—before settling in Newport Beach. That’s where Brandon proposed, on the roof deck of their home, amid a beautiful setting of flowers and candles. THE PARTY The couple settled on the elegantly rustic Klentner Ranch in Carpinteria for the big day. “It was close enough for guests based in Southern California, but far enough to feel like a destination,” says Calee. The affair began with an intimate ceremony on the lawn, followed by a poolside cocktail reception— complete with jaw-dropping views of the Pacific and Santa Ynez mountains—and ended with a seated dinner reception on the estate’s private polo field, where escort cards led guests to tables representing the couple’s favorite hotels throughout the world (from a traditional ryokan in Japan to The Standard in New York, where the couple celebrated their engagement). WHAT THEY LEARNED “Make sure your photographer has a shot list; shop around for vendors and don’t be afraid to share your opinions with them,” says Calee. THE HONEYMOON The couple’s six-week-long getaway involved eight flights across four countries. “Highlights were visiting the markets in India, swimming in the aquamarine water filled with sea turtles and fish in the Maldives, touring the underground caves beneath the city in Saint-Émilion, Pintxos bar-hopping in San Sebastian and a peaceful canoe ride with a local fisherman on Lake Vembanad in Kerala,” says Calee. –Wendy Bowman From top: The bride dazzled in an Amy Kuschel wedding dress, while the groom looked dashing in a custom Givenchy suit, a tie gifted from his dad and a Louis Vuitton tie clip; after the ceremony, guests were invited to enjoy cocktails on a private polo field bedecked with an eclectic mix of velvet settees and wooden stools. At the outdoor reception, attendees were led to rustic, gauze-covered wooden farm tables topped with centerpieces made of garden roses, Mexican feather grass and dahlias. KEDIST TSADIK & DAN WALTERS

May 3, 2015 Ceremony & Reception: Triunfo Creek Vineyards Photography by Adriana Klas

THE COUPLE Although UCLA classmates Kedist and Dan felt instant attraction when they met at a school football game with a group of friends, she became truly hooked when Dan averted disaster by retrieving her lost handbag. Three years later, during a walk on a Malibu beach, he surprised Kedist with Champagne and roses. She screamed yes before he had time to present the ring.

THE PARTY A year-and-a-half-long search finally led the couple to Triunfo Creek Vineyards in Malibu, their dream venue. “Dan and I wanted a day that felt warm and intimate that reflected our tastes and laid-back California lifestyle," says the bride. As an ode to their experience studying abroad in Paris, the couple had a Frenchcountryside theme epitomized first by an idyllic outdoor ceremony under a giant oak tree, then a farmhouse-style dinner with clean tablescapes and lush greenery. They also infused personal touches throughout, recruiting Kedist’s grandmother as the officiant; close friend Doll Knight to sing their first dance song “La Vie En Rose"; and by serving Ethiopian food, a nod to Kedist’s heritage.

WHAT THEY LEARNED “Outsource as much as you can to family and friends that you trust," Kedist advises. “They want to help and be a part of your day." The duo rallied many longtime friends to serve as vendors.

THE HONEYMOON The couple organized a mini-moon in Tulum and a longer Ethiopian vacation, but plans held up when two months later, they received some happy news: They were pregnant with a baby girl. “She is perfect," says Kedist. —KelsiMaree Borland

Parisian Dreams

To infuse a French countryside-feel into their Malibu vineyard setting, Kedist and Dan hung lemon leaf and plumosa greenery from the rafters, while white ranunculuses, anemones and peonies filled in as centerpieces.

LAURA ARNOLD & CASSIDY HINMAN

December 5, 2015 Ceremony & Reception: The Dana Powers Barn Photography by Sanaz Heydarkhan Photography

The COUPLE Laura and Cassidy met through similar social circles in college, but as both were in committed relationships, gravitated toward friendship. Four years later; the pair took a chance and decided to take things to the next level. It worked. Fast-forward four-plus years, to an oceanside picnic in their hometown of Santa Barbara, where, despite a few hiccups (their dog, Ammo, dragged the ring box through the house before the couple left for the beach), Laura, an office manager; popped the question.

THE PARTY While elegant florals, a serene color palette and bucolic surroundings helped paint a picture-perfect scene, it was the intimate nature of the celebration that made the affair truly one of a kind. For their nuptials, the pair added an excerpt from Justice Kennedy’s dissertation that made same-sex marriage legal across the United States—an ode to the legality of their union. For a personal touch, in lieu of standard place cards, the newlyweds gave each guest a handwritten note. The highlight of the night, however, had to be the first dance, which was a Beyonce breakdown of Laura and Cassidy’s favorite songs by Queen Bey.

WHAT THEY LEARNED “Your guests won’t care about things you think are going wrong nearly as much as you think they will," says Cassidy, a scientist. “Everyone in the room is just happy to be there celebrating the happiest day of your life. Don’t sweat the small stuff—no one else is."

THE HONEYMOON After their “I do’s," the Arnolds headed to the impeccable Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora to soak up the sun on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. -Jess Charmoli

Well-Lit

For the reception space, The Dana Powers Barn was decked out in neutral hues and vintage decor to create the laid-back atmosphere Laura and Cassidy were looking for. To play up the rustic feel of the celebration, the brides chose to serve barbecue for the reception meal.

DANIELLE SOVE & TAYLORPYATT

July 31, 2015 Ceremony & Reception: Montage Laguna Beach Photography by Scott Clark

THE COUPLE Danielle Sove and Taylor Pyatt met the good old-fashioned way—at a Chicago bar on Danielle’s 23rd birthday in 2010. The two immediately clicked and have been together ever since. After several months on the road—Taylor is a professional hockey player—the couple experienced an extra-sweet homecoming when Taylor got down one knee and popped the question on their front steps.

THE PARTY The globe-trotting duo knew they wanted a beach wedding without standing directly on the sand, and their planners, Gold Leaf Event Design & Production, recommended the Montage Laguna Beach. After a gorgeous oceanside ceremony on the front lawn, their 80 guests were treated to a beautiful alfresco dinner A French aesthetic—courtesy of barn-wood tables, bistro-style chairs and elegant seating vignettes—prevailed. For a personal touch, olive oil from Danielle’s family’s grove in Greece was displayed displayed on tables.

WHAT THEY LEARNED “Take in the day and leave the rest to the experts,” says Danielle, a private chef who runs her own catering company. She adds that walking down the aisle to see Taylor standing at the altar was the most memorable part.

THE HONEYMOON The duo traditionally attends Lollapalooza in Chicago every year, but they couldn’t make it in 2015 due to the close proximity to their July wedding. Instead, they decided to try a new music festival, South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, in March. —Amanda Friedman

Ocean View

Dinner was served alfresco atop long wooden tables dressed with white linen, hand-stitched runners by La Tavola and ornate candelabras. Looking with Taylor at all of the tables with their closest family and friends was “absolutely the most perfect moment,” Danielle says.

THE COUPLE After meeting at a mutual friend’s party in in 2008, NYC-based Brian and Andrew noticed an instant spark. "We kept finding ourselves in the same circles of conversation, making eye contact, standing near each other more and more," recalls Andrew, a writer and editor. "We started holding hands, and we’ve been holding them ever since." The two moved in together in fall of 2010, and later, for Brian’s law-firm job, lived in Italy. Upon their return to the States, Brian—who is now an executive corporate, securities and finance counsel at General Electric—proposed on Andrew’s 35th birthday, presenting him with a silver Tiffany key ring.

THE PARTY The couple knew that they wanted to get married in Palm Springs, and settled on newly renovated, Kelly Wearstlerdesigned Avalon Hotel. "We picked the Avalon because, among other reasons, it is planted all over with citrus trees," Andrew says, noting that Brian’s mother is from nearby Redlands, Calif., where she grew up on an orange grove. "We liked the connection and incorporated it into the wedding design."

WHAT THEY LEARNED "A destination wedding was key," Andrew says. "We’re not sure we would have been able to tune out the rest of our lives if we’d been closer to home."

THE HONEYMOON The pair have plans to take a trip to South Africa and Botswana. "We’ll spend time in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, Cape Town, the Cape Winelands, Kruger and Sabi," says Andrew, who is working with Micato Safaris to plan the trip. -AF

TERRA DELGADO & JASON ELINRLRG

October 10, 2015 Ceremony & Reception: The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe Photography by Erica Schneider

THE COUPLE Terra and Jason met through mutual friends in 2010 while living in downtown San Diego, but after moving to different neighborhoods the two stayed in touch mostly via Facebook. Three years later, when Terra got an English bulldog puppy and remembered that Jason had two himself, she suggested getting the pups together. “Jason’s response was, 'Forget the dogs—let’s meet for dinner instead," she says. “After spending the weekend together, we both knew there was something more." On Dec. 13, 2014 (12-13-14), Jason surprised Terra with a trip to Disneyland. At sunset, he proposed at Cinderella’s Castle, with his best friend photographing the moment. Talk about a real-life fairy tale!

THE PARTY The day began with a ceremony at the Spanish Colonial-style The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe’s lush rose garden, then segued to the reception on the property’s Azalea Lawn, decked out in twinkling lights; gilded details; and centerpieces of peonies, dahlias and roses to match the venue’s garden decor. Terra made many of the accent pieces: gold-dipped feather place cards, an antique, gold-framed seating chart and light-up marquee letters.

WHAT THEY LEARNED “I planned the whole wedding," says Terra. “It was such an amazing feeling to look at everything and say that I did it all myself."

THE HONEYMOON Once the official celebrations ended, guests kept the party going at the hotel bar and throughout brunch the next day. Terra and Jason then jetted off to honeymoon in Bora Bora, where they stayed at the luxe InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa, swam with sharks and laid under the South Pacific sun. —Archana Ram

DIANA THAMRIN & HOWARD LEE

September 19, 2015 Ceremony: St. Agnes Church Reception: The Bently Reserve Photography by Milou + Olin Photography

THE COUPLE In 2009, a friend of Diana Thamrin’s told her she had to meet this mystery man, Howard Lee, but nothing ever came of it. Fate intervened a year later when the two met through another friend on a weekend getaway to Napa, where the pair hit it off. For Valentine’s Day in 2014, Howard, a financial director, whisked his love off to that very place, where he asked her to be his wife.

THE PARTY A mix of high and low centerpieces with simple natural-hued blooms created a sophisticated backdrop for the big day, but the pair’s main focus was creating a fun atmosphere for guests. To get the party started, glow necklaces were passed around and out came Tainted Love, an ’80s band the bride and groom saw together in the early stages of their relationship—Diana’s surprise gift to her new husband. “The look on his face was precious!" The newly minted Mrs. Lee says. After working up a sweat on the dance floor, friends and family indulged in late-night bites like fish and chips, Kobe beef sliders and milkshake shooters.

WHAT THEY LEARNED “Don’t sweat the small stuff," advises Diana, a pharmacist. “Decide what elements of the wedding are very important to you and that will help with budgeting as well."

THE HONEYMOON After their “I do’s," the lovebirds flew east for the trip of a lifetime exploring Paris and London. -JC

In Full Bloom

For the high centerpieces, Cherries Flowers placed a bundle of simple calla lilies in modern concrete vases to keep with the minimalist aesthetic and color palette. Fig branches, blush buds and votives were placed around the table as accents.

AMBER DERCOLE & JOEL BAKER

June 20, 2015 Ceremony & Reception: Villa Montalvo, Saratoga, California Photography by Jen Huang

THE COUPLE Saratoga natives Amber and Joel met in school—although there is some debate about exactly when. Amber says it was middle school and Joel insists it was high school, but they both agree that their seven-year romance began in college. While on vacation in Tuscany, the duo took a weekend trip to Rome, where, among the Forum ruins, Joel fell to one knee and asked Amber for a lifetime.

THE PARTY “The vibe was alfresco-elegant," says Amber of their Tuscan-themed wedding. “We love the food, the organic feel and the easygoing lifestyle of that area. It’s very reminiscent of what we love about California living as well." The historic Villa Montalvo in Saratoga was the perfect setting for conjuring Italian ambience. After an enchanting ceremony in the oval garden, the couple served handcrafted Tuscan lavender-and-blackberry smashes in the courtyard and dined at family-style tables on the veranda. With stunning vintage glassware and cascades of wildflowers, the romantic theme touched every detail.

WHAT THEY LEARNED “Let go and trust the process and people around you," says Amber She remained very flexible throughout planning and even rescheduled the rehearsal dinner so everyone could watch the Warriors play in the NBA championships.

THE HONEYMOON Joel’s parents surprised the newlyweds with a trip to Barbados, which they won at The V Foundation charity auction. “The proceeds went to support a great cause, and we had a trip to remember forever" says Amber. “It was very special." -KMB

That's Amore

To evoke true Tuscan ambience, the couple created outdoor lounge areas where guests could enjoy the Villa Montalvo, and they turned out to be one o f ' A elements of the big day. “It madefor a refreshingly low-key experience that our guests could really enjoy, ” she says.
