MEAGAN DUFFY & BRETT BURGIN

June 6, 2016
Ceremony & Reception: The Astorian
Photography by Ama By Aisha

THE COUPLE Meagan Duffy and Brett Burgin met through a mutual old friend the same week they met online. A year and a half later, when at her parents’ beach house for New Year’s Eve, Brett asked Meagan’s father’s permission to propose at a fireworks stand. When Meagan’s father said yes, they went back to the house and gave one of the biggest fireworks shows the neighborhood had ever seen. After the grand finale, Brett sneaked up behind Meagan and asked for her hand in marriage.

THE DETAILS Brett and Meagan chose The Astorian, with its stunning art deco style, for their wedding ceremony and reception, and added personal touches to make the day unique. Meagan’s brother performed the ceremony and Brett wore a Brackish bow tie given to him by his bride’s mother as a Christmas gift. The groomsmen and Meagan’s father also wore Brackish bow ties to match.

WHAT WE LEARNED Meagan fell more in love with Brett through the planning process as they created her dream wedding together—no detail was spared, as they grew to understand that this teamwork would carry into their marriage through good times and bad.

THE HONEYMOON Meagan and Brett honeymooned in Thailand for 16 days, traveling through Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and Krabi. –Chelsea Roy

DR.FARAH AMLANI & DR. IMRAN POONAWALA

May 28, 2016
Ceremony & Reception:
The Westin Galleria Houston
Photography by Joey T Photography

THE COUPLE Farah Amlani and Imran Poonawala met in 2005 through mutual friends at an academic achievement banquet. Imran was smitten, while Farah wanted to focus on school, but for the next two years Imran would surprise her with flowers and candies at youth activities and gettogethers until Farah couldn’t help but see that Imran was the one. The two stayed side by side through medical school; Imran is now a doctor of internal medicine, and Farah is a pediatrician. While visiting the Moody Gardens Festival of Lights in 2015, the two walked the illuminated trail and stopped on a bridge over the water, where Imran got down on one knee and proposed.

THE DETAILS Farah and Imran began their celebration with their Sangeet party on a Friday evening at Bayou City Event Center. Throughout the weekend’s various events, 525 guests were treated to gorgeously colorful and elegant ceremonies, and a reception full of flowers, candlelight and dancing. Chandeliers, umbrellas and a lifesize lantern adorned their various events, providing an extravagant but intimate feel to the festivities.

WHAT WE LEARNED “Life is always about compromise,” says Farah. “You chose this person for a reason and you have to trust your decision.” –CR

The Cake The stunning multilevel blush, metallic gold and white cake was made by Who Made the Cake and had a raspberry and Italian cream filling.

GABRIELA NAZARIO & MATTHEW HANRATTY

September 10, 2016
Ceremony & Reception: St. Michael Catholic Church
Photography by Tomas Ramos Photographers & Film Production

THE COUPLE Legend says Gabriela Nazario and Matthew Hanratty met on a stormy night following Hurricane Ike’s passing through Texas in 2008. Their parents lost power and they all went to a mutual friend’s house to spend the evening. That night, Gabriela and Matthew became best friends. They started dating the following summer and got married on the day they met, eight years later. Matthew proposed at Rainbow Lodge with an intimate soiree that integrated both of their families. “We shared a lovely dinner that night for the first time as one big family,” says Gabriela.

THE DETAILS It was an evening filled with personal touches and familial affection. There was a photo booth by Monkeybooth, a cigar roller that made cigars with the couple’s monogram, and at midnight, they had a pancake station with toppings galore, all in the name of the bride’s favorite meal.

WHAT WE LEARNED “Don’t forget about the real reason you are planning this incredible wedding—to marry your best friend,” Gabriela says.

THE HONEYMOON The couple jetted to Greece, visiting Athens, Santorini and Naxos, and filling their days with great wine and each other’s company. They took a sunset cruise in Santorini, rode horseback on the beach in Naxos and indulged in plenty of dinners with a view. –Mellanie Perez

Florals Blooming Gallery created a stunning bridal bouquet with blush garden roses that complemented the bridesmaids’ ivory rose and blush spray rose bouquets.

KATHRYN BLUM & LANHAM BASS

May 21, 2016
Ceremony: Holy Rosary Catholic Church
Reception: Hotel ZaZa
Photography by Minerva House

THE COUPLE Kathryn Blum and Lanham Bass met on a friend’s ranch at a New Year’s Eve party while both were studying in college at University of Georgia and Trinity University in San Antonio, respectively. Some of Lanham’s friends from college were people Kathryn grew up with, and after spending the whole night talking, they were inseparable.

THE DETAILS Using their love for the city as the main source of inspiration, Kathryn and Lanham set out to have “a really good party,” with plenty of grab-andgo food options, including a fajita bar, sliders, chocolate chip cookies and tasty appetizers at the Phantom Ballroom in Hotel Zaza.

WHAT WE LEARNED “Enjoy the engagement period and don’t sweat the small stuff, like the vendors,” Kathryn says. “When I walked into the reception, all I saw [were] the faces of friends and family, not the candles or the color of the tablecloth.”

THE HONEYMOON The active couple wanted to jet off somewhere different within a few hours of Houston, and Nicaragua fit the bill. They spent one week in Jicaro on a tiny island in the middle of Nicaragua, and another week in Mukul. –MP

Decor With the help of Savanna Gray of En Vogue Events, the Phantom Ballroom at Hotel ZaZa exuded elegance for the reception. The tables featured groupings of lavender, blue, green and blush flowers. The large banquettes added warmth to the venue and served as focal points.
