Sweet Auburn Barbecue’s Blake Carter aims to get us “Comfortably Numb” with his cool concoctions. While managing celebrity restaurateur Howard Hsu’s finger-licking hot spot Sweet Auburn Barbecue in Poncey- Highlands, Blake Carter had to often assist behind the bar mixing cocktails during busy shifts. This eventually led to Carter, 28, developing a fondness for crafting his own unique concoctions. Now he’s recognized as one of ATL’s best behind the bar. Originally from Los Angeles, Carter was a couchsurfing guitarist booking gigs wherever he could before transitioning into the hospitality industry and finding a home directly across the street from Sweet Auburn Barbecue. When asked what made him decide on Atlanta, Carter says, “Diversity and hospitality. I’ve seen and received nothing but good vibes and times here.” To avoid “muddied drinks,” Carter’s cocktails are typically limited to no more than five ingredients, but still deliver inventiveness with every sip. “There is a beauty to simplicity,” he says, as evidenced by his flavorsome Comfortably Numb (which won the People’s Choice Award at the High Museum’s recent Highball competition). The name pays homage to one of his favorite bands, Pink Floyd; it also might foretell an imbiber’s reaction after downing a couple of them! SWEET AUBURN BARBECUE 656 N. Pamplemousse liqueur ¾ oz. lemon juice ½ oz. basil simple syrup Shake all ingredients and strain into a rocks glass over a king cube. Garnish with a fresh basil leaf.
