Publisher’s Note July 2009 LOUIS F. DELONE Publisher Nextmonth, the staff of Houstonmagazine willhost thepublishers’meeting ofModern Luxury Publishing, our parent company. We have luxury lifestyle magazines in 14 diff erent cities across the United States, and about 60 of our publishers and editors are coming to Houston for three days of meetings, events, entertainment and the opportunity to experience this fi ne city. It is a privilege to host this meeting, and it is important to all of us at the magazine that our associates return to their hometowns with a great impression of Houston. NowHouston, of course, will impress them in many ways, including with the food, the arts and, most importantly, the friendly and interesting people. T e city also has a spectacular Downtown skyline—in fact, Forbes Traveler magazine recently named it one of the eight “most stunning” in the world, up there with Paris and Hong Kong. But a nice fi rst impression is diffi cult when you have colleagues coming in from George Bush Intercontinental Airport. While the many taco stands add charm, and the 22 Texas fl ags (I counted them) defi nitely show pride, theHardy Toll Road is not exactly the Pacifi c Coast Highway. Directions from the George Bush Airport to our offi ce in the Galleria might go something like this: Look for the “713-R-U-HAIRY?” billboard on Beltway 8 right before you turn onto the Hardy Toll Road. Once on theHardy Toll Road you will go by at least one pipe manufacturing business, and also a pipe fi tter and a pipe bender. T en look for the three auto salvage operations, the used-transmission store and the used-hubcap business, all on your right. Keep going until you pass the abandoned tattoo parlor on your left, and you can’t miss the enormous gravel pit just before the Crosstimbers exit. Take that exit onto 610West. Exit again at the large bright-pink adult bookstore beside the Galleria and you are there. Hmmm, maybe we will have themfl y into Hobby. ldelone@ modernluxury. com 2 | | July 2009 PHOTO BY JACK OPATRANY, HAIR MARK HORN, SHIRT AND TIE BY BRIONI, COURTESY NEIMAN MARCUS
