Mix ’n’ Max Fashionistas love layering printed fabrics and textures.Now, themix fix is in at home, as top interior designers thoughtfully group beloved personal objects and sculptureswith graphic rugs, printswith pizzazz and touchable textures, piled on every surface. “It never looks too decorated,” saysTributeGoods, Inc. designer KarenPulaski,whose own new living room, pictured, is a collage of chic. “You go from element to element and just feel good in the space,” she says, “like you want to hang out in every room.”Te familiarity comes from a balance—betweenmasculine and feminine, old and new,matte and sheen—that “everyone will find inviting and warm.” For his part, interior designer VernonCaldera layers geometric art, smart objects and bright pops of color in his home. Getting it right takes relentless editing. “You’d think you could throw anything together,” he says, “but, so it doesn’t become a hot mess, you have to reduce things down to the core of your story. A piece has to have emotional resonance.” Pulaski’s home mixes printed metallic wallpaper, bold fabrics such as the plush pink on a “bergere” armchair, and a mod ottoman. Elements of Style Raid the runway for inspiration, and learn an object lesson... get busy “Tis layered interior look really stems from fashion,” designer Vernon Caldera says. Indeed, Custo Barcelona and Marc Jacobs sent lots of layers down the Fall 2010 runway, unabashedly mixing prints like plaids and stripes. “It references geometric patterns and a lot of the layering of the ’80s.
