trimmings Curiosity Shop Mark Pei and Travis Flazer couldn’t have picked a better name for their cubby-size shop Hound & Quail . Th ey are skilled hunters when it comes to fi nding the hippest home wares. They had designers going nuts for their mid-century furniture fi nds at their late Chinatown spot Area, and now they showcase what looks like the cabinet of curiosities of a punk rock Victorian. From antique doll heads found at a Dutch fl ea market to funky iPad carriers that look like manila envelopes, Pei, a pilot, and Flazer, assistant theater technical director at Punahou School, prove that they have a sharp eye. For more than 40 years, the Oahu native’s design fi rm, Philpotts & Associates, has set the bar for both aesthetic grace and environmental integrity in projects ranging from private homes, luxury resorts, restaurants, corporations and major public-use facilities. Her signature? Creating “a sense of place” for all her projects, regardless of location. Most recently, that distinctive island signature lifted, brightened and softened guest rooms at the Prince Hotel Waikiki.
