March 3-4 As part of The Honolulu Festival , dancers, musicians and other entertainers from across Asia and the Pacific will perform throughout the day on Centerstage. The festival, held at different locations in the city, is an annual event designed to promote understanding and harmony between the people of Hawai‘i and the Pacific Rim through cultural exhibits, events and celebrations. March 30 and April 20 The Junior Company of the Hawaii State Ballet will perform at 7 p.m. at Centerstage. Top students, ages 14 to 18, from the ballet company will perform classical and contemporary dances from “The Nutcracker,” “Giselle,” “Swan Lake” and more. Under the direction of John Landovsky, Hawaii State Ballet was formed in 1983 and has been one of the state’s top ballet schools. Every Other Wednesday The legendary Royal Hawaiian Band performs at Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage. The band, which recently celebrated its 175th anniversary, was founded by King Kamehameha III, and is the only band in the U.S. with a royal legacy. Its mission is to share songs of the islands with both residents and visitors. Visit alamoanacenter.com for performance times. Every Saturday From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Ala Moana Farmers’ Market features farmers and local vendors selling fresh produce and prepared foods. The weekly market is located at the upper-level parking lot (near Sears at Ala Moana Boulevard and Piikoi Street). Daily Hula Show The Ala Moana Hula Show takes place at Centerstage from 1 to 1:20 p.m. The cultural performance features an emcee and six dancers, showcasing kahiko and modern hula dances. Choreographed by Hawai‘i’s own Mechelle Lave, the complimentary show was created especially for Ala Moana Center, with Kumu Hula (teacher of hula) Kapua Dalire-Moe serving as the show’s cultural advisor. Although The Ala Moana Hula Show will not be performed on Sundays, hula will still take Centerstage, with the regularly scheduled Ala Moana Center Keiki (child) Hula Show at 1 p.m. The show demonstrates how the tradition of hula is being perpetuated through Hawai‘i’s children. March 10 This year’s Cherry Blossom Festival Queen Contestants will make an appearance at 3 p.m. at Centerstage. Each contestant will be introduced and have a Q & A session on a variety of topics. The event, which celebrates Japanese culture, also features cultural entertainment, including taiko performances, karate and odori. March 19-25 Ala Moana Center’s fifth annual Shop a Le‘a will feature fashion shows, fashion seminars, live entertainment, trunk shows, product launches, in-store events and other promotions. There will also be a mall-wide gift-with-purchase. For details see page 34.
