It’s with these customers in mind that Original Scent, a custom fragrance bar tucked inside the Nikki West boutique in Pasadena, was created. The brainchild of renowned niche perfumer Sarah Horowitz (whose clients include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jessica Biel and Jennifer Garner) and her partner, entertainment branding agent Nicole Winnaman, the mini-shop is a far cry from the department store spray girl. Here, personal attention trumps eau de toilette assault. Based on each customer’s likes and dislikes, a scent stylist begins by selecting a group of essential oils and fragrances—sweet and floral, green and spicy— from a library of more than 200 possibilities to create a specific aromatic profile. Drop by drop, individuals are then guided through a multitude of olfactory options to edit down their fragrance palate until a unique bouquet emerges. Top, middle and base notes weave together to capture the essence of a mood, a personality, an emotion or a moment in time. Once tweaked and perfected, the final mixture can be worn as an oil, blended into a perfume or mixed into a variety of body and home products, from lotions and laundry detergent to candles and conditioner. Bottled and labeled, the formula for each person’s original (and secret!) scent is filed away to ease reordering. Along with the blending bar and Horowitz’s pre-mixed fragrances, visitors will also find a smattering of additional easy-on-the-nose products including books, candles, and fragrances by Loree Rodkin, Ron Robinson and Sage Machado. Scent-sational, indeed. Blending experiences start at $99; 34 Hugus Alley, One Colorado Courtyard, Pasadena, 626.657.2226, originalscent.com Bank On It You wouldn’t dream of going without insurance on your house or car, so why skimp on your body’s inevitable physical decline? That’s the forward-thinking mentality from the team at Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Inc. , a cosmetic surgery practice that’s one of the only places in California now offering a stem cell banking program in partnership with Tucson-based cryopreservation lab AdiCyte . Instead of trying to blast away those areas with more to love, this clinic’s program embraces them as a biological resource, since your adipose tissue— read: fat—is rich with the body’s most viable stem cells. Physicians here make the most of the jiggle by extracting the fat, either during plastic surgery or via a pain-free, 30-minute, in-office procedure, and then cryogenically store it with AdiCyte. When patients are in need of the cells for tissue regeneration (say, because of a heart attack or torn ACL), they’re just a call away. Costs begin at $985 (plus surgery fees), with $120 annual storage fees. Fat equals fountain of youth? We’ll freeze to that. 9454 Wilshire Blvd., ground floor, Beverly Hills, 310.888.8087 – Nadine Jolie
