By Lindsay Roseman Liz Williams swears by three fall coats: a dressy overcoat, a cool cropped jacket and a classic blazer. The debut collection from her new line, Coat Check Chicago (coatcheckchicago.com), has all three styles and more to step up your coat game this season. After cutting her teeth at Parsons School of Design in New York, Williams created costumes for some of Chicago’s most famed theaters—Goodman, Steppenwolf, Chicago Shakespeare—before launching her collection of Italian-wool outerwear. “A lot of the coat styles out there are the same, so I wanted to create something that could reflect someone’s personality on the outside,” she says. Williams is releasing Coat Check Chicago this fall at Kovet Boutique (1036 Willow Road, Ste. E, Northbrook, 847.849.4000, shopkovet.com). “They have really unique pieces; things that you can’t find anywhere else,” Williams says. It took just one look at the collection to know that Coat Check Chicago and Kovet would be a match. “They are beautifully made with wonderful details, and the fit is incredible!” says Karen Scott, owner of Kovet Boutique. “You will have your Coat Check Chicago coat forever, as the style is timeless and the construction is exceptional.” Williams lets us in on her fall style essentials and favorite trends. Is there a story behind the name? I was wearing one of my coats out a couple winters ago, and the coat check girl at a restaurant was telling me how much she loved it. She slipped a note in my pocket with her phone number to call her if I ever started making more. What’s your favorite fall fashion trend? I really love this return to minimalism, and I love how people are starting to take more time to think about their purchases rather Who are a few of your favorite designers? Definitely Christian Dior and Cristóbal Balenciaga; I really see them as two of the great architects of fashion. I’m also really inspired by Stella McCartney. What are your fall style essentials? I’m starting to love high-waisted pants with wide legs. That’s in part why I designed a couple of really short jackets.
